Chapter Six

Something smelled wretched.

Evangeline crinkled her nose at the stink. Pressing her cheek into her pillow, she tried to slip deeper into the dark recesses of sleep. Something tugged her covers. She tugged back.

“Evie.”

No. This time when she yanked the covers, they came up and over her face. She slowly drifted back into dreamland.

“Evie.”

Go away.

Whether she only thought it or spoke it aloud, the sentiment was the same. Be gone.

Cool air stroked her cheek as the blankets were lifted off her face. She snatched it back, then jerked it over her head.

“Come on, wake up.” Alex’s annoyance penetrated the sleep-induced fog surrounding Evangeline’s brain.

A ripe curse on the tip of her tongue, Evangeline popped out from her cozy nest, coming face to furry face with a set of twitching whiskers. And the source of the stench.

“Chester, you mangy feline,” she shouted, pushing him away. The cat let out an offended yowl as he scrambled from her bed. “Stay out of here until you learn to brush your teeth like a civilized animal.”

“What do you expect, feeding him a can of tuna every day?”

Evangeline squinted at the bedside clock. Her narrowed gaze slid to Alex. “It’s six thirty in the morning. Is the house on fire?”

“No.”

“Anyone bleeding?” she asked in a calm tone.

Alex smirked. “Not that I’m aware of.”

“Then why the ever-loving hell are you in my room?” Evangeline demanded, swinging the pillow at her sister’s head.

Laughing, Alex ducked out of harm’s way. Wrestling the pillow out of her hand, Alex tossed it back at her. “We’re witches, Evie.”

Evangeline stilled at the excitement in her sister’s tone. It wasn’t what she’d expected. When she regarded Alex, she saw none of the confusion and fear she’d fought through. In fact, Alex appeared downright delighted.

“That doesn’t bother you?” she asked tentatively. She couldn’t tell if Alex genuinely believed they were witches, or if she was only toying with her.

“No, I think it’s amazing.” Alex curled up next to her, tucking her hands under her chin. “After reading Dad’s journal, everything made sense. It became clear to me. I’m excited.”

Of course she was. Like most things in life, Alex sailed through where Evangeline had gone through hell. Between the whispers, the lies, and the talking cat, for shit’s sake, she’d been ready to check into a psych ward.

Alex was beaming like it was Christmas morning.

Sighing, Evangeline reached for the glass of water on her nightstand. She took a sip, glaring at Alex over the rim. “If you were a bubble, I’d pop you.”

“I want to cast some spells.”

The water turned to ash in her throat. Evangeline choked and sputtered, spraying her mouthful over her bedspread. Wiping her mouth, she cranked her head around. “You what?”

“Look,” Alex said, shoving Dad’s journal at her. “There are a bunch of spells in here. I tried one, but it didn’t work. I thought if we tried together, we could—”

“Stop.” Evangeline took the book, placed it on the bed out of Alex’s reach, then shoved it farther for good measure.
